Frequently AskedĀ
Find answers to the most commonly asked questions about chiropractic care at Think Chiropractic in Massapequa, NY.
What is chiropractic?
A Doctor of Chiropractic evaluates and treats conditions related to the spine and musculoskeletal system. Chiropractors help address joint restrictions and discomfort associated with everyday stress, falls, work-related strain, accidents, and poor posture.
What does a chiropractor care for?
Chiropractors take a whole-body approach to musculoskeletal health, focusing on identifying underlying causes of discomfort rather than simply addressing symptoms. Our goal is to help you not only feel better but move and function better, too!
What other conditions do chiropractors care for?
Some of the most common conditions chiropractors care for include headaches and migraines, lower back pain, neck pain, spinal discomfort, sciatica, disc injuries, joint pain, and muscle tension.
Patients may also seek care for fatigue, sleep difficulties, or discomfort associated with other health concerns. Conditions such as anxiety, ear infections, colic, and acid reflux require appropriate medical evaluation, as chiropractic care has not been established as an effective treatment for them.
Does chiropractic care work?
Yes! Research supports chiropractic care for certain musculoskeletal conditions, particularly some types of back and neck pain. Chiropractic treatment focuses on improving joint mobility, reducing discomfort, and supporting better physical function and movement.
What is a chiropractic adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is a specific, controlled force applied to a joint using the chiropractor’s hands or a specialized instrument. The goal is to improve joint motion, reduce stiffness, and support more comfortable movement.
What are the benefits of chiropractic care?
Your spine plays an important role in supporting movement, posture, and overall musculoskeletal function. When spinal joints become stiff or restricted, they can contribute to pain, tension, and reduced mobility.
Our goal is to identify and address these restrictions so you can experience improved movement, reduced discomfort, and a better quality of life.

How will I feel after an adjustment?
Most patients feel comfortable following an adjustment, although some may experience temporary muscle soreness or stiffness, similar to what you might feel after starting a new workout.
Occasionally, patients may experience mild achiness, dizziness, or a headache. These effects are generally temporary, but symptoms that are severe, persistent, or worsening should be evaluated promptly.
Does chiropractic care hurt?
Chiropractic adjustments are generally well tolerated. Our techniques are precise, controlled, and tailored to your comfort level.
Some patients experience mild soreness during their first few visits, similar to starting a new exercise routine. We use a combination of modern technology and established chiropractic techniques to provide appropriate care for patients with different needs.
Is chiropractic care safe?
Chiropractic care is generally considered a conservative, non-surgical treatment option for certain musculoskeletal conditions.
As with any healthcare treatment, there are potential risks and benefits. Our approach focuses on careful evaluation and selecting techniques appropriate for each patient’s age, condition, and individual health needs. Certain techniques, particularly those involving the neck, carry rare but potentially serious risks.
Does my health insurance cover chiropractic?
Many health insurance plans include chiropractic benefits, while others may have limitations or exclusions.
Visit our Payment Options page under Patient Information to learn more about the payment methods we accept.
How much does chiropractic care cost?
The cost of chiropractic care varies depending on your condition, its severity, and the treatment recommended.
Following your consultation, we’ll develop a personalized care plan and provide clear, upfront pricing. We encourage you to schedule an appointment so we can evaluate your needs and discuss your options.
What type of education and training do chiropractors have?
Chiropractors earn a Doctor of Chiropractic degree after completing extensive undergraduate and postgraduate education, often totaling approximately eight years.
Their training includes clinical coursework and national board examinations required for licensure. Chiropractors also complete continuing education to stay current with research, treatment protocols, and techniques.
How often do I have to come in?
The frequency of your visits depends on your condition, treatment goals, and individual needs.
Some patients visit multiple times per week, while others come in weekly or monthly. Even when pain has improved, some patients choose ongoing wellness care to help maintain mobility and manage recurring discomfort.
Dr. Barbati will recommend a schedule based on your examination and progress.
How long are chiropractic appointments?
Your first appointment and consultation typically take approximately 15 to 30 minutes, depending on your condition.
After you and Dr. Barbati complete your initial consultation and establish a care plan, follow-up appointments generally take 5 to 10 minutes or less.
We’re committed to providing efficient, personalized care while respecting your time.
What is the āpoppingā / ācrackā sound during the adjustment?
The popping sound sometimes heard during an adjustment is caused by changes in gas pressure within the joint fluid.
It’s similar to the popping sensation you may experience when moving certain joints. It is not the sound of bones rubbing together or cracking.
Remember, hearing a pop isn’t necessary for an adjustment to be effective!
I didnāt hear a sound, does that mean the adjustment didnāt work?
Not at all! The effectiveness of a chiropractic adjustment does not depend on whether you hear a popping sound.
Joint mobility can improve without any audible noise. Although many patients find the sound satisfying, it’s not an indication of treatment success.
What is Decompression / Traction & why is it beneficial?
Spinal decompression and traction involve gently stretching the spine to help reduce pressure on certain spinal structures.
These techniques may be considered for patients experiencing herniated discs, sciatica, or chronic lower back and neck discomfort. Depending on the condition, treatment may help manage pain and improve mobility, although results vary.
Can I get chiropractic care during pregnancy?
Yes! Some pregnant patients choose chiropractic care to help manage pregnancy-related back pain, pelvic discomfort, and changes in mobility.
Gentle techniques can be adapted to accommodate the physical changes associated with pregnancy.
Chiropractic adjustments have not been reliably shown to reposition a baby or shorten labor. Always discuss treatment with your prenatal healthcare provider to determine what’s appropriate for you and your baby.
Is chiropractic safe for children?
Pediatric chiropractic care uses techniques adapted to a child’s age, size, and developmental needs.
Children may experience musculoskeletal discomfort related to growth, posture, physical activity, or injuries. A thorough evaluation helps determine whether chiropractic treatment is appropriate.
Conditions such as colic, ear infections, reflux, and other pediatric health concerns should be evaluated by a pediatrician, as chiropractic adjustments have not been established as effective treatments for these conditions.
Are all patients adjusted the same way?
No two patients are treated exactly the same.
Chiropractic adjustments, exercises, and treatment recommendations are customized based on each patient’s age, mobility, comfort level, health history, and specific condition.
Why do I need Chiropractic care when I am not in pain?
Pain isn’t always the first indication of a musculoskeletal issue. Joint stiffness, restricted mobility, and postural strain can develop before significant discomfort becomes noticeable.
Chiropractic care focuses on supporting comfortable spinal movement and physical function, not simply addressing pain.
Some patients choose ongoing wellness visits to monitor mobility, address recurring stiffness, and receive posture and movement guidance.
Much like routine wellness checkups, these visits provide an opportunity to discuss physical concerns and maintain healthy movement habits.
Everyday activities, including exercise, lifting, sitting, or occasional minor injuries, can place stress on the body. Staying physically active and addressing symptoms early can help support long-term musculoskeletal health.
Can I see a chiropractor if Iāve had back surgery?
Yes, depending on your condition and surgical history.
If you’re considering surgery, conservative treatment may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider when appropriate.
If you’ve already undergone spinal surgery, Dr. Barbati will review your medical history, perform a thorough examination, and consider relevant imaging before determining whether chiropractic care is appropriate.
Treatment techniques can be modified to accommodate your condition, and surgical clearance may be necessary.
Can chiropractors help with sports injuries?
Absolutely! Chiropractic care may help athletes manage musculoskeletal discomfort, improve joint mobility, and support recovery from certain sports-related injuries.
Depending on the injury, adjustments, soft tissue techniques, and rehabilitation recommendations may be incorporated into a personalized care plan.
Our goal is to help athletes move comfortably and return to their activities safely.
